BACKAYARD

  • Rebel Salute 2010

So the BACKAYARD world tour has this time touched down at the Port Kaiser Sports Club in St. Elizabeth on Saturday 16th February. And we were treated to a show which year to year, has been one of the most consistently well run events in Jamaican entertainment. Rebel Salute which was being staged for a remarkable 17th straight time, in this instance with soft drink giant Pepsi as the title sponsor, was a wonderful mix between young upcoming acts and older more established veterans.

The early segment of the all night show was dominated by artistes such as Leaf of Life, Stream, Brown Suga, Chevaughn, Omari and Princess Tia all who exhibited both tremendous vocal range and stage presence belying their supposedly lack of experience in front of such a massive crowd. However the most standout performer of all the early acts had to be Romain Virgo. The 2007 Rising Star Winner had the largely vegetarian audience (remember at least at this concert thou shalt eat no meat) eating out of his hands. His songs: Murderer, Can’t Sleep and Rain is Falling among others really struck a chord with the audience and had he been allowed could have stayed on for much longer.

Veterans such as Daddy Uroy, Barrington Levy and Freddie McGregor gave good albeit too short performances; however this was only because of the massive running lineup which forced the stage manager to keep the show moving.  Both Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel, organisers of the show, performed excellent sets giving their fans something to enjoy even as truncated as they were.  Unfortunately, the tour bus was ready and BACKAYARD had to roll onto another event before Salute was completely through however here are some pics that illustrate the good time had by all.
